Light therapy is a useful tool for both individuals and practitioners, as it provides a soothing treatment with many physical benefits and takes no preparation.
While we simply call it “light therapy,” it refers to many types of therapy devices that might use infrared/red light, infrared/blue light, red with multiple colors, infrared only, or infrared with heat. The term light therapy includes the various ways light is administered, such as LEDs and Lasers. Light therapy devices come in many forms, from handheld devices to neoprene pads. Light Therapy: How it works
The red and infrared light diodes from a light therapy device are absorbed by the skin, muscles, tissues, and bone, as well as working at the cellular level by raising white blood cell count. The result is improved cell growth, DNA synthesis, and protein synthesis in cells. Light therapy also helps enhance blood circulation, increase oxygen supply, stimulate collagen production, and strengthen skin tissues.
All light therapy is not the same, with devices producing differning effects on the body. Light wavelength, power density, light source, and frequency are the properties that determine the light therapy device’s effect on the tissue.
