What’s in your Toolbox?
Why the Answer should be “A Microcurrent Device”
Q&A with Deborah Powell, as published in SouthWest Horse Trader (July 2011)
Why did you become a believer in microcurrent therapy?
I’ve always had a soft spot for broken horses, but in the past had limited success getting them sound. Then in the early 1990s I discovered microcurrent. Suddenly I had a safe, reliable tool to effectively heal my rescue horses. Healing horses became a fun challenge, rather than a daunting and expensive experience.
How did this lead you to start your business, Matrix Therapy Products?
After discovering how effectively microcurrent healed my horses, my friends began pestering me to share the therapy products I was using. Because of my background in electronics, my friends suggested I use my knowledge to identify quality devices and help horse owners choose microcurrent products. Why is microcurrent an important therapy?
I consider it a foundation therapy, because microcurrent produces fast results and I have seen it completely heal horses that had little hope of full recovery. Treatments are extremely versatile and can be adapted to treat any condition. Plus, microcurrent units are cost effective tools to have in your barn.
Do horses enjoy microcurrent treatments?
Yes, they love it! They actually become microcurrent junkies.
What does it feel like?
Depending on the type of unit you’re using, it will vary from no sensation to a slight tingling.
Are there many types of microcurrent units?
Yes, there are a wide variety of choices, allowing you to find the unit that best suits your needs. With the advancements in technology, microcurrent devices have gotten smaller, smarter, and easier to use. They are now a fraction of the size with twice the capabilities of the older, larger units.
How do microcurrent devices on the market vary?
They vary in size, features, and prices. One of my favorites is the battery-operated patch that works great on legs and can be left on for several days. The more traditional units range from low-cost, handheld units that are ideal for short, attended treatments to large units with a wider range of features, such as the Precision MicroStim. The advancements in technology have also enabled the development of the Avazzia Best-Vet, which is a smart, biofeedback device that can locate problem areas.
What is a biofeedback device?
There actually are different types of biofeedback devices. The Precision and Electro-Acuscope have a biofeedback setting that can read tissue resistance. However the newer devices, such as the Best-Vet, can analyze tissue resistance, hydration, and cellular voltage while simultaneously treating the area. The Best-Vet is even smart enough to automatically adjust the treatment to meet the needs of the area it is treating.
Is it hard to learn how to use?
Microcurrent therapy is extremely safe and anyone can do it. The simple units, such as battery-operated patches, don’t require any training. However some of the more advanced units – such as the biofeedback devices – require a small amount of training to fully utilize the features.
Why use Microcurrent Therapy?
Microcurrent therapy is low-level stimulation that ramps up the body’s self-healing mechanisms. A few conditions microcurrent helps:
- Annular, check, and suspensory ligament injuries
- Tendon injuries
- Hoof conditions
- General body soreness
- Boosting immune system
- Healing wounds
- Speeding up the healing process
Do you offer training? Where can people learn?
I offer phone consultations and hands-on training sessions, as well as sharing information on my websites. Also, in 2008 I wrote a book to provide a source of basic microcurrent knowledge, protocols, and other people’s treatment methods.
